Xbox: Half of UK gamers want Microsoft to launch handheld console



Around half of UK video gamers expect Microsoft to launch a new portable console to rival Sony's PlayStation Vita, despite long-term concerns over the handheld market.

The survey, of 1,921 self-confessed gamers by price comparison site www.Playr2.com, indicated that 51% of respondents believe that an Xbox handheld is on the way, and 62% of that group expect to see it "within the next two years".

Of those surveyed, 48% classified themselves as Xbox gamers.

Sony last week unleashed the PlayStation Vita in various territories outside of Japan, gaining positive reviews for the product and helping worldwide sales top 1.2m.

Of those surveyed who said they were Xbox gamers, more than 55% said that they were "impressed" with the new PlayStation handheld device, but only around 18% indicated that they were "considering" purchasing one.

However, around two-thirds (67%) of Xbox gamers said that they would purchase a similar Microsoft device. Overall, 35% of respondents felt that all gaming would be soon be "portable" via consoles, smartphones and tablet computers.

"Technical advancements that enable portable consoles to have specs that match those of their living room-based cousins mean that handheld gaming needn't have to suffer in quality as it traditionally has," said Simon Kilby, the founder of Playr2.com.

"Handheld consoles such as the Vita are giving a better gaming experience than ever before, making it an attractive prospect for gamers on the move.

"Whilst Microsoft haven't confirmed any rumours about the possibility of developing a handheld console to rival the Vita, our results suggest that a handheld device to accompany the Xbox would go down well with Xbox fans.

"Like it or not, gaming is on the move; so the future may well see Microsoft developing a handheld device to stay in the game."

Sony's PlayStation Vita is forecast to generate around $2.2 billion (£1.4bn) in hardware sales in 2012 alone, but this could mask greater challenges facing dedicated portable consoles.

Despite the Vita's strong content lineup and impressive specs, analyst firm Strategy Analytics recently warned that the device faces "enormous challenges" from the growth of smartphones and tablets, which play more casual games but have other functions.

Strategy Analytics also said that it is hard to encourage consumers to buy a dedicated handheld games console above the $200 price range, and it expects Sony to soon introduce a price cut for the Vita in the same way that Nintendo did to stimulate the 3DS.

Non č solo l'europa e l'Italia...č proprio tutto l'occidente. Solo che in america non tira Fifa ma tira ad esempio l'MLB o l'NFL (che usciranno a breve pure loro su vita). Non č certo una novitą.

non credere che sony navighi nell' oro. di schiaffi ne sta prendendo da tutte le parti. vita, tv, tablet...... ha chiuso in rosso anche quest' anno.

Chissą quante in Europa.

Secondo me 200.000 č gią troppo ottimistico come numero se quelli sono realmente i pezzi venduti in UK.

A me la situazione di PS Vita pare abbastanza chiara, prezzo alto per una portatile e per un momento di crisi, line up post lancio scarsa (diciamo pure inesistente in Giappone) e 3DS forte.
Per Nintendo sarą facile vendere, č vero che hanno dovuto tagliare ma per via del prezzo troppo alto, la stessa cosa che dovrebbe fare Sony se vuole riprendersi. In pił il 3DS anche quando costava 250 euro non aveva mai venduto poco come sta facendo PS Vita in queste settimane, anche in assenza di giochi.
Probabilmente Sony adotterą la solita strategia di aspettare 1\2 anni per lanciare una versione lite + taglio di prezzo...il problema č dove sarą arrivato il 3DS fra due anni se gią ha la line up attuale.

Ma Sony non ha mai pensato nemmeno lontanamente di competere con Nintendo,che e' troppo forte in Giappone (anche se la storia insegna che non si e' mai troppo forti) ed ha dalla sua il pieno supporto delle terze parti.
Si vede anche con quanta poca incisivita' organizza il proprio marketing qui.
Credo che puntera' a ripetere i risultati (ottimi) ottenuti con Psp ed augurarsi di raggiungerli.
